Feeling fitter while picking up litter – that was the aim of walkers in Blackpool’s Moor Park.

Over 50 people who are taking part in Blackpool’s Step to Health programme doubled their efforts by picking up litter in the park as part of the Keep Blackpool Tidy campaign.

Steps to Health is Blackpool’s free community walking programme.

The scheme looks to encourage local residents to leave the sofa, stretch their legs and get some fresh air, as well as meet new friends. The main aim is to increase the amount of physical activity for people who would normally do little exercise.

Steps to Health has been running since 2003 and now engages around 600 people on a monthly basis with seven walks of varying lengths taking place each week from different venues.

The Keep Blackpool Tidy campaign, which began last year, is aiming to encourage more residents, visitors and businesses to take pride in keeping the resort clean.

Cllr Gillian Campbell, Deputy Leader of Blackpool Council, said: “Both initiatives are making a real difference to both individual lives and the wider communities in which we live.

“The recent combined walk and litter pick is a great example of people getting out, taking some exercise and at the same time doing something that has a real positive impact on our environment. They are to be applauded.”
