LCC Cabinet lead for Community Safety, Cllr Julie Gibson, will be leading the call for LCC to show its commitment to tackling hate crime, racism and xenophobia and to promote diversity and tolerance across the County.
Cllr Gibson said: “In light of the recent statement from the National Police Chief’s Council, we have sadly seen an increase in hate crime incidents across the country. I will be moving a motion at Full Council to call on Lancashire County Council to explicitly place on record that it condemns racism, xenophobia and hate crimes unequivocally.”
She continued: “The County Council is carrying out a lot of good work to promote diversity and tolerance. The recent publication of our hate crime strategy is evidence of this; as is the partnership working between ourselves, Borough Council colleagues, the office of the PCC and representatives across the Voluntary, Community and Faith Sectors.
Despite this we know that victims of such incidents are often unwilling to report them for fear they will not be taken seriously. The motion also highlights our commitment to support and work with any person who has been a victim of hate crime or racism to come forward and report it.”
Cllr Gibson concluded: “We want all residents and visitors to Lancashire to realise that they are valued members of our society and as Councillors we are ideally placed to make that commitment to the people and communities across Lancashire.”
The motion will be heard at the Full Council of Lancashire County Council on 21st July.
