A celebration day on Wednesday is set to open a newly built resource to support adults with autism in Blackpool.

The ‘A Shed’ has been developed at the Blackpool Centre of Independent Living (BCIL) on Whitegate Drive, aimed at providing a space for people on the autism spectrum to get support and training.

At the same time, a new garden has been built at the back of building where service users can learn about growing and looking after the plants and flowers.

The resource will be launched at a celebration day for the seventh anniversary of the BCIL opening. The celebration day will take place on Wednesday 22 June between 10am and 3pm, with Mayor of Blackpool Council Kath Rowson and Cllr Amy Cross attending and officially opening the ‘A Shed’.

Providers of disability services in Blackpool, including Empowerment, Disability First, the Alzheimer’s Society, Spiral Health and the Carers Trust will also be available on the day to offer out advice and information on the services they provide to the community.

The celebration takes place as part of Learning Disability Week, which runs from 20-26 June, which will also see an open day hosted by the learning disability friendship club on 23 June between 11am and 2pm.

The friendship club runs weekly from the Wainwright Club on Hornby Road, and provides opportunities for people with learning disabilities to socialise, make friends, learn new skills and participate in a range of community activities.

Both open days are available for everybody to attend.
