A banner has been erected over the M55 motorway that reads "Activists Frack Off Our Fylde."

It is not known who installed the sign.

Since the start of the year, regular lock-on protests have caused the full or partial closure of the A583 Preston New Road.

A spokesperson for Backing Fracking said: "It is increasingly clear that local people really are fed-up of the behaviour displayed by these out-of-town activists.

"Just a few weeks ago, a letter signed by over 350 local residents was sent to the Chief Constable of Lancashire Police thanking him for the work his officers are doing daily at Preston New Road. But the letter also expressed a desire to see a stronger police response, and that's a theme that comes through strongly on social media.

"The fact that someone has been motivated to step things up a level, by making and erecting a very prominent banner like this, further highlights the strength of feeling that exists locally."

The large blue banner with white lettering is visible above the westbound carriageway somewhere between Preston and the Kirkham exit at Junction 3 of the M55.
